Shorter Projects:

These are short projects of 1-3 months duration. They are open to physicists and engineers alike.

Project #1 Magnetic Traps

Magnetic traps are at the very heart of most BEC experiments. Typically, such traps are driven by high currents and need considerable cooling.

During this project you would design and test a novel type of magnetic trapping coils which leave far more optical access to the trapped atoms, without sacrificing much of the trapping strength.

You will use an advanced computer program to calculate and optimize the fields. You will then produce and test such a coil.

Project #2 Optical Interferometry

Diode lasers continue to develop rapidly. Key criteria are frequency stability and reliability of operation. You would construct an optical interferometer, which can measure the fast frequency deviations that exist in diode lasers.

You will learn to use optical fibers, acousto-optic modulators and some RF technology.
